Innovation Unleashed (Coaching Vignette)

Simply put, being innovative means that one can create useful, new ideas that solve needs in new ways. 


With so many talented colleagues in a manufacturing company, the head of engineering was not able to draw out new ideas that would enable the strategy. As much as he tried to prompt his teams to ‘think’, nothing came of it. Upon analysis, I realized that despite his direction, employees did not have open and questioning mindsets, nor did they stretch assumptions or see multiple angles to the challenge. Even if they had these abilities, they were not given the space or permission to expand their thinking. In addition to establishing psychological safety, I helped the leadership team develop questioning mindsets and be able to stretch assumptions, seeing paths to a solution. By developing the leaders’ ability to swap out their current way of thinking and learn a new approach that helped them unleash deep insights, the team was able to develop several new ideas that propelled them toward achieving their strategy.
